Golovkin-Macklin: Gennady looking for another easy KO win

By Scott Gilfoid: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (26-0, 23 KO’s) is looking to add another scalp to his growing collection next month in his fight against challenger Matthew Macklin (29-4, 20 KO’s) and you couldn’t find a more perfect opponent for Golovkin to accomplish this task than if you tried.

Macklin is one of those straight ahead type fighters that comes right at you from the 1st round on and looks to punch with you. His fighting style is usually reserved to only the fighters that have big power, but unfortunately for him he doesn’t have much pop in his punches.

Macklin needs to overwhelm his opponents with nonstop punches for him to win, and he does badly when he faces an opponent that can actually punch, as we’ve seen in his knockout losses to Sergio Martinez and Jamie Moore in addition to his points loss to Felix Sturm.

Macklin has lost two out of his last three fights, but he got the title shot based on his 1st round knockout win over 37-year-old Joachim Alcine last year in September. It’s hard to believe that all Macklin had to do was beat Alcine to get a crack at another title, but that’s pretty much all he had to do I hate to say.

Golovkin, 31, has been nearly perfect in terms of knocking guys out. He’s stopped his last 13 opponents dating back 5 years. That’s a pretty incredible statistic. I can’t imagine a fighter winning by knockouts for 5 years in a row, but a part of the reason for Golovkin’s long string of knockouts is he’s not faced anyone really good. His best wins during that time has come over Gabriel Rosado, Grzegorz Proksa, Kassim Ouma and Nobuhiro Ishida.

I rate Rosado as about as good as Macklin, and perhaps a little bit better than him. Rosado had to run almost the entire time in his fight with Golovkin. He did try and slug with him in the 5th round and found a little bit success in catching Golovkin off guard. However, in the 6th round, Golovkin hurt Rosado and then finished him off in the 7th.

I don’t see Macklin as having any chance in winning this fight. He’s going to come right at Golovkin on June 29th and will play into his hands by doing that because Golovkin will be able to unload on him with his big power shots and take Macklin out by the 5th round at best.
