Floyd Mayweather, Opinion doesn’t matter

floyd#261By Tom Drury: After reading some of the comments posted by “so called” boxing fans on my last article (Money vs. Pacman) it seems they have an obsession with (bias). As you all know I am a Floyd Mayweather fan and have no doubt the biggest part of the boxing fraternity are, analysts, trainers, fighters and fans. Opinion is part of life it is what makes us human, if there wasn’t opinion life would be very boring.

Bias and opinion are two things that are irrelevant in regards to Floyd Mayweather, “facts” are what matter and the facts are Mayweather is undefeated after 17 years in the sport, he is a pioneer in regards to RBT and his desire to make sure we have a clean sport, he is the first boxer to be the worlds highest paid athlete, he has won eight world titles in five different weight classes, he contributes hugely in regards to economy in the worlds greatest city (Las Vegas), and he holds the record for highest ppv revenues generated in his fight with Oscar De La Hoya. His professional resume is made up with wins over (1) ranked fighters, mandatory challengers, knockout artists and multiple world champions, he also donates and contributes hugely to various charities/charity projects. These are the facts on Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Before being naive and uneducated when it comes to boxing read those facts and ask yourself where you can find as much credibility surrounding any other fighter from the Mayweather era?.

It is clear after being part of this forum for nearly 12 months the fans posting don’t know the difference between fact and opinion, this is due to lack of research, lack of viewing fights and only following the household names then jumping on the rumor bandwagon without substance or credibility.

Mayweather vs. Pacquiao

I’ll start by saying I have no problem with talking about this subject it has been the hottest subject in boxing from late 2009 up until Pacquiao’s devastating KO defeat at the hands of Juan Manuel Marquez (I personally liked Manny Paquiao and enjoyed watching many of his bouts, after paying for his PPV’s I never felt short changed, in my opinion he is a fighter not a boxer there is a difference and would never be competitive against Mayweather Jr)

In the lead up to negotiations for a Mayweather/Pacquiao match up, rumors and opinions were rife. Pacquiao and trainer Freddie Roach first called out Mayweather back in 2009, i distinctly remember Mayweather’s response “Manny who?, he needs to earn a shot at me by fighting and winning the best” Pacquiao did that knocking Ricky Hatton out in scintillating fashion and dismantling Puerto Rican legend Miguel Cotto. So negotiations back on 2011. It is very simple why this fight did not go ahead, RBT!, Pacquiao and his team would not submit to rbt testing right up until the fight, that is it end of negotiations.

Fans claim Mayweather is injecting (xycl) in his hands. Where is the proof? Why hasn’t Floyd been made to answer this accusation infront of a governing body? please dont answer that by saying CORRUPTION! FLOYD IS THE MAFIA!, it just doesn’t wash boxing is now a worldwide mainstream sport and the best it has to offer is the worlds highest paid athlete, with that mantle comes great responsibility and trust me any suspicion of Mayweather foul play, he would be held accountable.

Another popular claim (Floyd is ducking!!) ducking what? Pacquiao is a brawler with knockout power, simple in and out rhythm fighter, he is tailor made for Mayweather. What has he got that Juan Manuel Marquez hasn’t, Cotto hasn’t or Guerrero hasn’t?

The fact is, there has been no definitive proof Pacquiao has used performance enhancing drugs but neither did he agree to RBT. If he had he would have received the biggest payday of his life. Now to my opinion, Pacquiao’s decline is confusing to say the least. After negotiations broke down with the Mayweather team and refusal to participate in RBT, we have witnessed him losing to a very limited/average Timothy Bradley and left cold on the canvas by Marquez. Irony, Paquiao still wants a Mayweather fight, with RBT and a lesser share of the purse?

My personal opinions

Mayweather Jr. is the greatest of all time, 17 years undefeated, highest paid athlete with a great professional resume.

Mayweather Jr. is the greatest defensive boxer of all time, 36 years old and fights like a 30 year old, hardest man to hit on the planet (unless he chooses to give the fans a mix it up cameo.

Mayweather Jr. a great role model. I know I’ve set myself up for criticism with this comment but bring it on. He lives a clean lifestyle in regards to the temptations on offer, alcohol, drugs etc, his work ethic is second to none, and his skills genius!

The greatest threat to Mayweather’s unbeaten record is an Argentine by the name of Lucas “The Machine” Matthysse.
