Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao a comparison

floyd#83By Matt: Floyd Mayweather is often called a cherry picker or he is said to be ducking opponents. In this article I would like to take a closer look at these accusations and compare Mayweather achievements to Pacquiao’s.

In 2001 Mayweather fought Diego Corrales at that time was 24 years old, in his prime and undefeated. Was Corrales cherry picked? I don’t thinks so.

In 2002 the Mayweather- Castillio fight was a rather close one but prior to the fight Mayweather had injured his shoulder; nevertheless, Mayweather won that fight. This was not an easy fight for Mayweather still he choose to give Castillo a rematch and win more convincingly the second fight. There was no cherry picking here.

In 2006 Mayweather took on Carlos Baldomir who had not lost in 8 years.

In 2007 Mayweather fought six-division champion and WBC light-middleweight titleholder Oscar De La Hoya. Mayweather was outweighed by more than 10 pounds the night of the fight, coming in at only 150 pounds.

Later in 2007, Mayweather faced Ricky Hatton; Hatton at that time was undefeated and had beaten
Kostya Tszyu 2 years earlier. Again this doesn’t looks like cherry picking to me.

In 2011, Mayweather fought Ortiz who was the WBC welterweight champion. Again Ortiz wasn’t cherry picked since Mayweather said he would fight the Berto- Ortiz winner. Had Berto won that fight we would have seen Mayweather fight Berto.

Recently Mayweather dominated Robert Guerrero who was the WBC  mandatory challenger. Guerrero was the mandatory challenger and he had beaten Berto so no cherry-picking here.

Now let’s take a look at Manny Pacquiao’s recent opponents:

Pacquiao fought Morales in 2005, losing to him, and then fighting him twice in 2006. Pacquiao beat Morales in this two rematches.

In 2008, Pacquiao dominated Oscar De la Hoya, but Oscar had been beaten by Mayweather one year earlier and he was clearly weight drained. De la Hoya weighed in at 145 lbs. for the fight. The last time he fought at that weight was in 1997.

In 2009, Manny knocked Hatton out. However, 2 years earlier Hatton had been beaten by Mayweather. Mayweather said he took a lot out of Hatton when they fought.

Also in 2009, Pacquiao dominated Miguel Cotto, but Cotto came from a punishing defeat one year earlier against Antonio Margarito. Also Cotto stated the catch weight he had used in the Pacquiao fight made him weak. Mayweather faced Cotto at 154 without a catchweight in 2012 and beat him by a 12 round unanimous decision.

In 2010, Pacquiao destroyed Margarito one year after Margarito was already destroyed by Mosley.

In 2011, Pacquiao defeated Mosley only after Mosley had been defeated by Mayweather one year earlier.

Now Pacquiao will face former WBA lightweight champion Brandon Rios, who is coming from a loss against Mike Alvarado from last March.

How many undefeated fighters has Pacquiao faced? How many fighters came from a loss when they faced Pacquiao?

Now you see that Pacquiao is actually more cherry picking than Mayweather and fighting more Mayweather leftovers in some cases.
