Dirrell defeats Mouton

By Scott Gilfoid: Showing good power and excellent hand speed, unbeaten super middleweight Anthony Dirrell (25-0, 21 KO’s) pounded out an impressive eight round unanimous decision over the game but limited Don Mouton (11-7-1, 9 KO’s) on Friday night Cosmopolitan Resort, in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.

The final judges’ scores were 77-75, 78-74, 77-75. Dirrell, 28, was the far busier fighter and the stronger puncher, but he made things harder on himself than it really needed to be by standing in the pocket and electing to trade shots with Mouton.

Dirrell still dominated but he was hit with some hard shots in every round of the fight, and for this reason, Mouton was able to take some rounds.

Dirrell is capable of out-boxing his opponents without getting hit just like his older brother Andre Dirrell, but he chose instead to get in the trenches with Mouton to nail him with big shots.

I had Dirrell winning all 8 rounds, but I can see how the judges would give Mouton some rounds because Dirrell stood in there too long inviting return fire from Mouton. When you know your opponent is a limited slugger, you don’t want to just stand in front of him all night long to give him his only chance at winning the fight.

Dirrell looked rusty compared to his last performance over a year ago in December 2011 when Dirrell stopped Renan St Juste. Dirrell has been out of action with a broken leg and arm that he injured in a motorcycle accident last year.

With this win, Dirrell will likely be back in the ring real soon to continue getting warm up fights to get rid of the ring rust so that he can get ready for bigger fights.

In other action on the card, super featherweight Carlos Velasquez (15-0, 11 KO’s) defeated Giorgi Michedishvili (8-5-1, 1 KO’s) by a 6 round unanimous decision. The judges’ scores were 60-53, 59-54 and 59-54.
