Deontay thought he was being robbed

wilder3423By Scott Gilfoid: I had a feeling that there was a rush to judgment by some boxing fans about unbeaten heavyweight Deontay Wilder’s alleged assault last Saturday night and it looks like I may be right. According to Deontay’s attorney Paul Patterson, he says Deontay thought he was about to be robbed last Saturday night in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Speaking with the tuscaloosanews.com, Deontay said “Deontay instinctively acted under the impression that someone was stealing from him. That wasn’t the case. He regrets his actions. He is extremely regretful…He and the victim have spoken about this and the victim has accepted his apology. We hope this matter will be brought to a resolution soon.”

So there it is. Deontay thought he was being robbed by someone he didn’t know and he reacted to it
This is great news because Deontay can continue with his promising career and keep moving forward towards a hopeful title shot in 2014. He’d like to fight against one of the Klitschkos this year, but he’ll probably have to wait until he’s locked in as the mandatory challenger before he’ll get one to fight him.

I mean, you’re probably not going to see one of the Klitschkos handpick a slugger like Deontay out of the heavyweight pile the way they’ve been picking out fringe contenders like Albert Sosnowski, Manuel Charr, Jean-Marc Mormeck, Francesco Pianeta and Mariusz Wach in the past couple of years.

The Klitschkos have been really playing it safe by selecting these guys, and I don’t see them hand-picking a huge puncher like Deontay like that in a 100 years. That’s just not going to happen because he’s not a safe pick. He’s a dangerous pick capable of knocking both of them out once he gets his chance.

It’s still unclear who Deontay’s promoters at Golden Boy will pick out for him for his next fight but my guess is it will be one of the young heavyweights like Seth Mitchell, Johnathan Banks or Bryant Jennings.
