(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Dan Ambrose: Former WBO light welterweight champion DeMarcus Corley doesn’t understand why Floyd Mayweather Jr. (43-0, 26 KO’s) is wasting his time fighting Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KO’s) instead of someone more talented.
Corley just sees Guerrero as a dirty fighter that will try and rough Mayweather up to get a win like he did against Andre Berto last November.
Guerrero, a southpaw, thinks Mayweather has problems against southpaw fighters due to his struggles against Corley and a prime Zab Judah in the past. However, Corley doesn’t agree with Guerrero at all, and he doesn’t see Guerrero as having the skills to give Mayweather problems.
Speaking with RingTV, Corley said “Guerrero has no similarities to me and Zab…he don’t have no skill. All he has is winning any way he can, dirty punches, rabbit punches. He’s just a dirty tactics fighter…I don’t see why Floyd is fighting him.”
It seems pretty obvious why Floyd is fighting him. This Saturday night is the Mexican holiday Cinco de Mayo, and Floyd wants to take advantage of the holiday by having a pay per view bout on Showtime. For it to be successful in attracting a lot of Mexican viewers, Floyd needs a Mexican fighter.
Guerrero isn’t from Mexico but Mayweather is obviously hoping that Guerrero’s Mexican heritage will be enough to attract a lot of Mexican fans. I suspect it won’t be enough.
Mayweather should have chosen a Mexican fighter from Mexico instead, but there’s not a lot to choose from at 147 unless Mayweather were able to get Saul “Canelo” Alvarez to boil down from the 170s and fight him at 147 with a rehydration clause of 154 tops.
That would be a huge fight, but Canelo would probably never agree to fight Mayweather at 147 and he’d definitely not be happy to hear about a rehydration clause that would keep him in the 150s. But to expect Mayweather, who comes into his fights at 150 lbs. rehydrated, to fight 170+ pound fighter, that’s not fair to Mayweather.
Guerrero is pretty the best that Mayweather could get for the Mexican holiday, and the only thing he can really do is try to rough Mayweather up. Guerrero can’t use a 20 pound weight advantage to try and crush the lighter Mayweather like Canelo would no doubt try and do, and he’s not going to be able to blast him out with huge power because Guerrero can’t punch in this weight class.
The only thing he can do is resort to roughing Mayweather up like he did against Andre Berto last November and then hope the referee fails to do anything about his fouling.
