chavez jr5454By Scott Gilfoid: Well, it looks like Martin Murray’s recent 12 round unanimous decision loss to WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez won’t be hurting him as badly as some people thought it would. Former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-1-1, 32 KO’s) is interested in fighting Murray on August 3rd in Mexico City, Mexico, according to Mexican news.

This would be a fight where both guys are coming off of losses, as Chavez Jr. was soundly beaten by a a relatively healthy Sergio Martinez last year in September by a 12 round unanimous decision.

Murray fought Martinez last month on April 27th and lost a 12 round decision at the Club Atlético Vélez Sarsfield, Buenos Aires, Distrito Federal, Argentina.

The difference in this fight was that Sergio Martinez broke his left hand early in the fight, and he came into the fight with a bad right knee that he hadn’t rehabbed fully after having torn cartilage in it last September in his fight with Chavez Jr.

Still, even with a bad knee and a broken left hand, Martinez was able to dominate Murray and win the decision. Murray blew his only chance of winning the fight by failing to let his hands go.

I think Murray won’t be able to handle the size and power of Chavez Jr. Murray had a clear weight advantage over Martinez last April. You could see it by looking at the two fighters. Murray looked much heavier and I wouldn’t be surprised if he had rehydrated to close to 180. But against Chavez Jr, Murray will be giving away at least 10 pounds of weight, possibly even more.

Chavez Jr. recently said he wants his next fight to take place at a catch-weight of 165. That’s no big deal, but it does show you that he doesn’t want to boil down to 160, and it gives you hint that he could come in really heavy for the fight. That’s bad news for Murray because without a weight advantage of his own, he’s going to be in deep, deep trouble against Chavez Jr.
