chavez5434By Tim Wathen: With WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez out for the remainder of 2013 due to an existing hand and knee injury he re-aggravated during his fight with Martin Murray, it opens the door for an even more exciting match-up between middleweights Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-1-1, 32 KOs) and Gennady Golovkin (26-0, 23 KOs). Chavez Jr.

was expected to rematch Martinez in September after suffering his first defeat last year to the champion. Chavez Jr. has previously announced his interest in fighting Golovkin (or GGG, as he’s known to his fans), arguably the most dangerous fighter in the middleweight division.

Likewise, Golovkin has stated on numerous occasions that he is willing to enter the ring with anyone weighing in from 154lbs to 168lbs. Currently, Golovkin’s next fight is scheduled for June 29 against a tough Matthew Macklin in what could turn out to be a great match-up In its own right.

Chavez Jr. is also expected to be back in action early this summer after suffering his first loss to Sergio Martinez and handed a 9 month suspension for testing positive for marijuana.

With both Chavez Jr. and Golovkin willing, and no apparent promotional feuds between camps, fight fans could possibly see this clash take place as early as October of this year. The sweet science has been overly generous to its fans this year with some already explosive fights.

At the end of the year, this fight could be standing at the top of the mountain overlooking an already crowded landscape of Fight of the Year contenders. And for that reason, the future can ’t come soon enough.
