Chavez Jr. beats Canelo with ease

chavez45By Dan Ambrose: A match-up that would draw a huge amount of interest in the boxing world is a fight between former WBC middleweight champion and the current WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. This fight is a no-brainer in that it would create huge pay per view ratings if it were scheduled on one of the Mexican holidays like Cinco de Mayo where they could take advantage of a huge Mexican population enjoying the holiday festivities.

Unfortunately it may never happen despite Chavez Jr. and his promoters at Top Rank really wanting the fight. Golden Boy Promotions, the promoters for Canelo, are cool to the idea of matching him against the heavier and much more active Chavez Jr. Canelo comes into his fights weighing in the lower 170s, whereas Chavez Jr. comes into his fights weighing in the lower 180s up to 190.

Golden Boy doesn’t want Canelo fighting a guy that out-weighs him from 8 to 18 lbs. What’s interesting, though, is that Golden Boy has no qualms matching the 172 lb. Canelo up against the 146 lb. Floyd Mayweather Jr. where Caneo would enjoy a 26 pound weight advantage. Is there something wrong with this picture?

On one hand Golden Boy doesn’t want to match Canelo up against an opponent that may have an 8 to 18 pound weight advantage, but on the other hand Golden Boy is perfectly fine with letting Canelo sport a 26 pound weight advantage over Floyd Mayweather Jr. That just seems wrong. I wouldn’t mind it so much if Golden Boy was okay with Canelo fighting someone with a weight advantage over him, but they obviously aren’t and won’t let him fight Chavez Jr.

I think Chavez Jr. is a bad match-up for Canelo not because of his weight advantage. I think the biggest reasons is Chavez Jr’s better stamina, his excellent chin and his tendency to work hard for a full three minutes of every round. Chavez Jr. would walk Canelo down and force to fight.

There would be no rest breaks for Canelo because Chavez Jr. would force him to trade, and if Canelo couldn’t do that for three minutes of every round for 12 rounds then he’d get knocked out. It’s as simple as that. Canelo could forget about using his head movement because it wouldn’t help him against Chavez Jr. because he would attack him to the body and Canelo would have major problems.
