Canelo will have to move off September 14th date if he doesn’t face Mayweather

canelo454By Dan Ambrose: WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) is in a bad situation as far as his next fight date goes on September 14th. Canelo absolutely has to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. on that date because if he doesn’t, he’s going to be bumped from that date by Mayweaher Jr.

Canelo wants to fight on September 14th in order to take advantage of the Mexican Independence holiday. The problem is Canelo wants that to be his first pay per view fight. Well, he’s not going to draw flies if Mayweather goes ahead and fights on that date as well.

Both are Showtime fighters, and Canelo will likely stubbornly refuse to fight on Mayweather’s undercard. If Showtime has to make the call which fighter they’ll televise, it’s going to be Mayweather. Canelo doesn’t fight for HBO, so I puts him in a position where he has to fight Mayweather or he’ll have to agree to fight on his undercard or in a split site situation or simply move off the date.

It’s not looking good for a Mayweather vs. Canelo fight in September – or any time in the future. Canelo wants Mayweather to fight him at 154, but Mayweather is really more of a lightweight who fights at welterweight. Mayweather rehydrates up to 146.

He’s a lightweight in size. Canelo is more of a light heavyweight who fights at junior middleweight against light welterweights and welterweights.

If Mayweather agrees to fight Canelo at 154, Canelo will probably rehydrate up to 172, which is light heavyweight an enjoy a four division weight advantage over Mayweather [junior middleweight, middleweight, super middleweight and light heavyweight]. That’s not going to happen.

Mayweather isn’t going to make a mistake of fighting someone with a 26 pound weight advantage over him on fight night, and Canelo doesn’t want to melt down 7 pounds to 147, because he’s barely making 154. It’s got to be really tough on Canelo to drain down from 172 to 154 for his weigh-ins, and then rehydrate back up to 172. That’s hard on his body.

So he’s not going to melt down even farther to 147, because it’s probably not possible. Canelo couldn’t even make 150 when he fought for the vacant WBC junior middleweight title against welterweight Matthew Hatton two years ago. Canelo missed the weight by nearly two pounds.

If he missed 150, you just know he’ll 147, which is why Mayweather shouldn’t agree to any fight with Canelo unless there is a weight penalty into the millions just in case Canelo agrees and then comes into the weight way over weight.

Canelo will have a hard decision to make if he can’t get the Mayweather fight on September 14th. Like I said, he can fight on Mayweather’s undercad like a good one, fight as part of a split site PPV telecast, fight in a non-PPV fight without it being televised on Showtime or move off the date.

I think the smart thing for Canelo to do is move off the date entirely and fight in November instead. I just hope Canenlo isn’t stubborn about it and still chooses to fight on September 14th in a separate card.
