Burns stops Gonzalez on lucky break

burns43333By Scott Gilfoid: WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (36-2, 11 KO’s) got a really lucky break tonight when his opponent Jose Gonzalez (22-1, 17 KO’s) suffered a wrist injury and was unable to come out for the 10th round on Saturday night at the Emirates Arena, Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom. >

Burns was trailing 7 rounds to 2 on my scorecard and the only round you can arguably give him was the 8th and 9th after Gonzalez injured his wrist in the 7th round after totally dominating Burns in the 7th.

There saying that Gonzalez may have broken his wrist in the 7th when he had Burns badly hurt and out on his feet. Burns came back later in the round after Gonzalez suffered a wrist injury, but it wasn’t enough for him to win the round. Gonzalez clearly won the round, as he did the first six rounds as well. After the hand injury, Burns was able to win the 8th and 9th, but he looked hardly dominating compared how he’d looked in past fights against fodder opposition.

Burns still would have needed a knockout to win the fight. There wasn’t enough rounds left for him to win a decision after giving away the first seven rounds of the fight, especially with Burns being staggered in the 5th and 7th rounds.

Burns threw a lot of punches in the 8th, but he missed almost every one of them. It was embarrassing to see it because even with Gonzalez no longer able to punch due to his injured wrist, Burns couldn’t do anything. His arms were too short and he was too slow.

After the fight, Burns’ promoter Eddie Hearn talked about having Burns back in the ring later on this year in September, but he said nothing about giving Gonzalez a rematch. I’m not surprised by that because would be very tough and if there wasn’t an injury, I could see him dominating Burns like he did tonight.

Other boxing results on the card:

John Simpson UD 12 Choi Tseveenpurev
Stephen Simmons RTD 3 Michael Sweeney
Rocky Fielding KO 1 Michal Nieroda
David Brophy pts 6 Gary Boulden
Stephen Simmons RTD 3 Michael Sweeney
