By Eric Thomas: Adrien Broner (26-0, 22 KO’s) seemed to really get under WBA welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi’s skin during their press conference last Saturday at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada to build interest in their June 22nd fight next month at the Barclays Center, in Brooklyn, New York, USA.

Broner said after the press conference: “He’s [Malignaggi] like a female who wears her feelings on her sleeves. He’s upset; he’s hurt. He’s going to go send threatening messages to Jess. He feels like I’m a 130 pounder, 135 pounder, but you saw when we were shoulder to shoulder, he’s little. He’s not at my level.”

Broner seemed to really get under Malignaggi’s skin by coming up with almost a standup comedy routine in ridiculing him when it came time for Broner to speak at the podium. By the time Malignaggi did get a chance to speak, you could hear how upset he was by listening to the way his voice was cracking and strained.

Broner had really gotten to Malignaggi and had him clearly upset. Even after Malignaggi had his chance to talk, he was still upset after sitting down. It was a clear win by Broner in terms of getting the upper hand at the press conference.

Malignaggi is going to need to come to his future press conferences with Broner with some kind of prepared material because Broner is like a trained actor/comedian and he just makes Malignaggi look so bad.

This is going to be a tough fight for Malignaggi because he doesn’t have a size advantage over Broner, even though he feels that the step up in weight will hurt Broner.

What Malignaggi doesn’t seem to be acknowledging is that Broner has been fighting at near 150 recently in his lightweight bouts after rehydrating, so it’s going to be little problems for him to fight a small welterweight like Malignaggi.

Now if Broner were fighting a large welterweight who rehydrated up to the mid-160s, then that would potentially be a big problem for him.

If Broner had to face Keith Thurman, for example, he would have to figure out how to deal with the extra weight that Thurman has as well as huge height, reach and power advantage. But with Malignaggi, Broner doesn’t have to worry about that at all because both guys are about the same size.
