Amir Khan should cash out and hang up the gloves

khan#2By Bashar Khaddage: Once a promising rising boxer from the UK, Amir Khan seemed to be on the right path for greatness, winning a silver medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics, at the the young age of 17 to become the youngest British boxer with an Olympic medal.

With legendary hand speed, quick feet and respectable punching power, Amir Khan cruised through his opponents. Moreover, his cocky character and unique ethnic background (no Pakistani British boxer to previously conquer the world stage) helped him become a household name.

Going into his 19th bout, in what should have been a relatively easy opponent, Breidis Prescott from Columbia brutally knocked out Amir Khan in an embarrassing fashion that raised serious question marks surrounding Amir Khans chin. Khan fired his trainer, and relocated to the renowned Wildcard gym, with legendary boxing trainer Freddie Roach.

Thereafter, Amir managed to capture 2 world titles at light welterweight including 2 impressive wins over the hard hitting Marcos Maidana and the quick and crafty south paw, Zab Judah.

It wasn’t until his bout with Lamont Peterson that Amir Khan was badly exposed as a boxer with serious defensive flaws that has no defensive technique whatsoever but to cover up and to quickly get on his bike and run away. Following the Lamont Peterson loss, Danny Garcia re-surfaced the issue of the questionable chin of Amir Khan by technically knocking him out, initially putting him down with a brutal left hook that Amir was lucky to not have landed on his chin, otherwise it would have been instant lights out.

Khan’s career was in serious jeopardy and took a major setback after his second loss in a row and has changed trainers once again to partner with the Virgil Hunter.

After watching his recent bouts with Carlos Molina and especially the one Julio Diaz, I am convinced that Khan will go nowhere special with his boxing career as he simply does not have the chin to take any blow whatsoever. It seems like Khan has already packed a lot of mileage and is an ‘over the hill’ fighter and simply cannot handle any decent punch to the chin.

If Freddie Roach and Virgil Hunter have not been able to change his game plan to become a better defensive fighter, then trust me, no one can. He is what he is – A defensively flawed fighter with a fragile chin. Amir Khan needs to try to land fights that pay him the highest possible amount of money and cash out before he seriously gets hurt in the ring.
