povetkin3By Shane Newsome: It’s that time of the week which means only one thing a return to my weekly article which in turn means only one thing yet another packed exciting week of boxing including three world title fights and returns for future Hall of Famer Shane Mosley and the Prizefighter series.

We Start the action on Friday at Crocus City Hall, Moscow, Russia with a WBA ‘Regular’ World heavyweight title fight between Champion and #1 contender for Wladimir Klitschko’s crown unbeaten Russian Alexander Povetkin (25-0) and also unbeaten pole Andrzej Wawrzyk (27-0) here we have a tricky stay busy fight for Povetkin and perhaps an unnecessary one with a fight against Wladimir later in the year all but signed he could have taken an easier fight but credit to him for this as he sets out to prove himself and a tricky fight against the 6’5″ unbeaten pole may be just what he needs to get ready for Wlad. Its a fight I see him winning by way of a comfortable decision I feel he has been in the harder fights to date and his experience should shine through here and prove a big problem for the relatively untested Wawrzyk but at the end of the day this is a Heavyweight fight and as has been proved time and time again can change with just one punch and although neither fighter has notorious punching power don’t rule out a knock out here which could go either way.

Also from this busy Russian card we have a WBA World cruiserweight title fight between Russian Champion Denis Lebedev (25-1) and Panamanian Challenger Guillermo Jones (38-3-2) here we have another good, well matched fight where the challenger has deserved his shot at the title but another fight where the Russian champion should be the favourite both fighters have good knockout records and 41 year old Jones has been stopped before in his career and that’s the way I see thins fight going, I see Lebedev who is an aggressive fighter stopping his man here quite late on in successfully defending his belt.

Staying with Friday we take a diversion to Hilton Lac Leamy, Gatineau, Quebec, Canada to pick up a fight between British Super-middleweight challenger James DeGale (14-1) and Canadian Sebastien Demers (31-5) and here we have a fight set up for DeGale to look good, Demers has lost his last three fights being stopped twice and since took nearly two years out of the sport, I see DeGale doing enough to get the win here and possibly by a stoppage, hopefully followed by more exciting fights later in the year as he is highly ranked by the WBC and a shot at the title could happen for him as soon as next year if he is kept busy.

Now to Saturday and Grand Oasis Resort, Cancun, Mexico for our first fight where future hall of famer Shane Mosley (46-8-1) makes a return after another year out against Pablo Cesar Cano (26-2-1) Cano is a true challenger and a tough opponent for Mosley, he has power and I see him beating Shane who is already on a streak of four fights without a win, win or lose though here for the 41 year-0ld Shane and perhaps a well met retirement is his best option and will put his fans at ease once and for all.

Next we go to Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA and probably the fight card of the weekend including the fight of the weekend Between IBF light welterweight Champion Lamont Peterson (31-1-1) and interim WBC light welterweight Challenger Lucas Matthysse (33-2) and here we have a truly intriguing fight and a tough one to call, one I feel Lamont has the boxing skills to win though Lucas has the power to make it a short fight, Peterson has been down a few times in his career but he always bounced straight back up as if unfazed, I see this being a very close fight that Peterson will win the majority of rounds before being knocked down and pushed all the way to the end and a close decision that could even end up as a draw though perhaps if there is a winner in this fight it will be Peterson, but I also wouldn’t rule out a KO for Matthysse, we have a truly exciting fight on our hands here, so i guess we will just have to see on the night.

Another fight on this card see’s IBF Welterweight champion Devon Alexander (24-1) defend his title against British challenger Lee Purdy (20-3-1) and with 6 stoppages in his last 7 fights Purdy does have the power to make this an interesting fight but it is widely thought that he lacks the talent to get to Devon and that this ought to really be an easy fight for Alexander and on paper this really should be just that and I to fully expect to see that though I wouldn’t be massively surprised if Purdy does pull off the upset here as he is a powerful fighter with the hunger to prove people wrong though this may just be a step too far for him.

Also on this busy Atlantic City card we have a great showcase of young talent including a fight between unbeaten Welterweight hopes America’s Shawn Porter (20-0-1) and Canada’s Phil Lo Greco (25-0) here we have yet another tough fight to call though I just feel Porter who has been in the more challenging fights has the experience to pull through and win this one on points and hand his competitor his first loss. also on this card are two great former amateur champions American bantamweight Rau’shee Warren (3-0) and British Middleweight Anthony Ogogo (1-0) with a chance to shine on this big card against some limited opposition. another fighter on this card is British Super-flyweight Haroon Khan (1-0) and he really needs to being to show his worth or live in the shadow of his older brother (Amir) for the rest of his career.

Our final action of the weekend comes from York Hall, Bethnal Green, London, UK and a return to Matchroom Sports Prizefighter and its third installment of the Cruiserweights competition and here we have a chance to inject some excitement into a not to exciting  division at domestic level. here are the quarter finals as follows Wadi Camacho (6-1) vs Martyn Grainger (8-6). Shane McPhilbin (8-6) vs Nathan Owens (5-0-1), Neil Dawson (11-1) vs Danny McIntosh (13-4), Conall Carmichael (4-0) vs Hari Miles (7-7) with the nature of this tournament to spring a surprise of two and no overwhelming favourite it really is a tough one to call though for me the winner I feel will come from the fight between Neil Dawson and Danny McIntosh, my dark horses though would be Wadi Camacho or the unbeaten Northen Irishman Conall Carmichael, but really as the Prizefighter concept has proved time and time again it is anyone’s guess and it would be silly to overlook any of the fighters.

I hope you have enjoyed the read and look out for my review of these fights and more on monday, please enjoy the fights and have a good weekend whatever you get up to, thank you. and next week we have perhaps the fight of the year between Mikkel Kessler and Carl Froch and many more.
