By Shane Newsome: For those of you who haven’t read one of my articles yet I will explain them to you, they are your well informed non bias reviews and previews to the big fights each weekend I strip the fights back and look past all the hype and promotions and straight at the facts, so please give a read and enjoy.
In a relatively ‘slow week’ in comparison to recent weeks we had some great fights including an incredible three world title fights which didn’t fail to disappoint and have the boxing world talking, if you weren’t able to catch the action then please enjoy my review.
We start at the Emirates Arena, Glasgow, Scotland, UK and perhaps the biggest fight of the night, a world title defense for WBO Lightweight champion Ricky Burns (36-2) against mandatory challenger Jose A Gonzalez (22-1) and a superb fight it was, with the 29 year-old Puerto Rican Gonzalez coming out in the earlier rounds showing some real class beyond his experience switch hitting and wining all but one of the first 6 rounds dominating Burns from a controllable range using his long reach at a pace he to controlled making burns over-reach and look out of his depth.
But then into the 7th round and where it all changed for the challenger though not straight away as he dominated much of this round as well, wobbling Burns pushing him to the ropes and picking him off at ease, Burns worked his way off the ropes and fired some shots back though hitting Gonzalez with a big uppercut that changed the fight and Jose’s legs just seemed to go from there on he continued to win the round but that was the last we see of Gonzalez as a competitor in this fight as he might as well not of come out for the 8th and 9th rounds, he showed nothing in either round as Burns piled the pressure on. Gonzalez went into his corner at the end of the ninth round as his corner men furiously worked on his seemingly dead legs, though in the corner was where Gonzalez would stay retiring from the fight citing a broken wrist as to why he couldn’t continue.
But being 3 maybe 4 rounds up and only 3 to go its hard to believe this as the true reason, it seemed as if his legs gave up first soon followed by his heart he threw all he had at Burns in the 7th round and Ricky stood up to it all and fired back. showing a champions will and a true heart infront of his hometown fans putting on a show and getting the win, I’d like to see Burns now face Miguel Vazquez in a fight that should have happened last year as it will be a great fight and a tough one to call, as for Gonzalez his future looks bright he is a well talented boxer and should get another shot at a title soon if he is matched up well in the near future.
Another great fight on this card saw Scottish Super-featherweight John Simpson (25-9) take on the tough British based Mongolian Choi Tseveenpurev (36-7) in a class match up where the pendulum swung back and forth constantly, the 41 year-old Choi showed some great stamina for his age as he set a furious pace though the Scott fired back well showing the classier work which earned him the victory though perhaps not as wide of a decision as the judges saw it. though this was a great fight where both fighters showed some skill I cant see either of them going too far off the back of it and a re-match might be the best move for both.
Finally from this card there were a number of unbeaten local fighters who all won, the pick of the bunch were Rocky Fielding (14-0) who looked impressive and strong in this keep busy fight getting his man out of there in the 1st round with a barrage of body punching, his future looks bright and its only up from here, and Stephen Simmons (8-0) who picked up a Celtic cruiserweight title stopping his opponent in the process, saying that he did look a bit limited and I’m not sure if he can go too far from here.
Now to the Keepmoat Stadium, Doncaster, England, UK and our second world title fight of the night for the Vacant IBF Bantamweight title between new champion Doncaster’s Jamie McDonnell (21-2-1) and Mexican Challenger Julio Ceja (24-1) and again another truly good and very well matched fight, both competitors deserved their shot at this title and both gave a great account of themselves but with his home crowd backing him all the way McDonnell showed some true class in out-boxing his heavy hitting opponent who was able to hurt Jamie late in the fight though nothing McDonnell couldn’t handle as he grinded out a win and came back at his opponent time and time again showing he wasn’t phased by the power or the occasion picking up a majority decision win and the IBF title in the process. after winning the title McDonnell has the world at his feet and he is improving with every fight a few defenses is probably what lie’s in store for Jamie now before possibly moving up in weight and challenging for another title, as for Ceja if he takes a quick step back there is no reason as to why he can’t challenge for another world title as soon as the end of the year.
Also on this card were a number of impressive unbeaten fighters who all picked up wins keeping their 0’s in a showcase of local action which also saw British bantamweight veteran Stuart Hall (15-2-1) pick up a very impressive win against young American Sergio Perales (22-2) Hall showed some class and hunger in this fight as he came out of it the deserved unanimous decision winner. I don’t see either fighter here making waves on the world scene but there are some great British level fights out there for Hall should he choose to take that route.
Now to our final championship bout of the night from Deportivo Agustín Ramos Millan, Toluca, México where WBC Light Flyweight Champion Mexican Adrian Hernandez (27-2-1) successfully defended his title against a game challenger Yader Cardoza (15-5) here we saw Hernandez make a tough night out of a supposedly easy fight though he did come through it as the unanimous decision winner he didn’t make it look as easy as the judges scorecards suggested it was saying that a win is a win and he did deserve it, I don’t feel Hernandez is ready yet for Roman Gonzalez and needs a few more fights under him before he can even think about that sort of fight, as for Cardoza he may have slightly peeked here and despite losing should have no real shame as he acquitted himself well and a return to this level in the not too distant future for him isn’t out of the picture.
