WBF Latin Title On The Line In Spain

It promises to be a heated affair on Friday April 19 in Oviedo, Spain, when Aitor “El Diamante” Nieto and Sergei “La Perla” Mba square off for the vacant World Boxing Federation Latin Welterweight title in front of a partisan crowd at the Florida Arena.

Nieto, from nearby Gijon less than thirty kilometers away, enters the fight with a fine 8-1 (4) professional ledger, and will be spurred on by the local fans. His only loss since turning pro in November 2011 came at the hands of undefeated Georgian super-talent Levan Ghvamichava, who beat Nieto by decision last year.

“I feel very good, and I am almost in weight. I will be ready to give everything I have on April 19”, said Nieto at a recent press conference to promote the fight. “I don’t know much about my opponent, and I have not seen any video of him, but I will be ready and I will come out victorious.”

Barcelona resident Sergei Mba brings a mediocre 5-4-1 (2) record, but is on a hot-streak of five victories after going winless in his first five bouts. Despite having the less impressive statistics, Mba has beaten better opposition than Nieto and holds wins over current Spanish champion Emiliano Casal and tough Venezuelan Pedro Verdu.

While Nieto doesn’t seem to be concerned about what Mba brings to the table, his trainer Borja Alvarez is well aware that his boxer will be in for a hard night, saying:

“I know that Mba is a good, tough fighter, and we can’t underestimate him in any way. He beat the Spanish champion! He is dangerous! But Aitor has worked very well in training, and he is physically, technically and mentally in top shape.”

The Aitor Nieto vs. Sergei Mba WBF Latin Welterweight title fight is presented by promoter Nestor Dominguez, who has a full undercard of nine bouts leading up to the main event.
