Tyson Fury’s trainer gives him poor marks for his win over Cunningham

fury54By Scott Gilfoid: Peter Fury, the trainer/uncle for unbeaten Irish heavyweight Tyson Fury (21-0, 15 KO’s), thinks he did a poor job in his 7th round TKO win over Steve Cunningham last Saturday night at Madison Square Garden in New York, New York.

Peter thought Tyson didn’t fight a disciplined fight, which might explain partly why Fury was dropped by Cunningham in the 2nd round from a big right hand.

Peter said on his twitter: “This wasn’t him last night. I give it two out of ten. This is what happens when I’m not there. He didn’t follow procedure; he just went out of control.”

I honestly couldn’t tell the difference between Fury in this fight and the one that has fought in his other fights. He was just as sloppy as he always is as he roughed up Cunningham, got dropped, which isn’t a new thing for him, and won the fight by holding Cunningham down with his left arm and nailing him with a fight to the head.

It was a typical performance from Fury and I thought he looked just as awful as he always does. Fury mugged the much lighter Cunningham and probably should have been docked several points instead of just one for head-butting.

There was nothing that Peter could have done that would have kept Fury from getting dropped from a right hand from Cunningham in the 2nd round short of slipping on some headgear to protect his chin. It wasn’t about Fury being undisciplined but more of a case of him not just having great talent to begin with. He won on size alone in this fight and he’s not going to be able to do that for very much longer.

Fury could face #1 IBF Kubrat Pulev in an IBF heavyweight title eliminator in July with the winner becoming the mandatory challenger to IBF champion Wladimir Klitschko. Fury won’t be able to shove the 250 lb. Pulev to the ropes and hold him in that position to nail him with shots. Pulev is too strong to be bulled around the ring and I suspect Fury will taste defeat for the first time in his career when that fight is made.
