Trout: Canelo wants to take my belt and give it to his brother Rigoberto; Why?

canelo443By Dan Ambrose: WBA World junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s) doesn’t understand WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s goal of beating him and then handing Trout’s WBA strap to his brother Rigoberto Alvarez, who Trout soundly beat by a 12 round unanimous decision two years ago.

Trout said to RingTV “I hear that he wants to take my belt and give it to his brother [Rigoberto]. I’m like, ‘Why?’ His brother didn’t deserve his belt either. Is that an Alvarez tradition? He’s not going to get my belt.”

That’s pretty funny, but I agree with Trout. Why would Canelo want to give Trout’s WBA belt to his brother who Trout already beat? If Rigoberto didn’t have the talent to capture the belt by beating Trout, then why would you give him something he didn’t have the ability to get in the first place? What’s the message that this sends to boxing fans seeing things like this? Does it mean you can get things given to you that you couldn’t accomplish yourself? I don’t understand the logic behind it and I know if I was Rigoberto, I wouldn’t accept a belt given to me by Canelo if I couldn’t beat Trout myself.

Canelo is really setting himself to look bad on April 20th when he faces Trout at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, because if Canelo doesn’t win the fight, he’s going to look potentially bad with all the pressure he’s put on himself with talking about how he wants to avenge his brother’s loss.

Canelo shouldn’t be trying to fight his brother’s battles for him because otherwise he could be spending a good portion of his career in the future wasting time trying to beat all the guys that will beat Rigoberto.

Canelo needs to realize that he’s not going to be able to change the past for his brother by trying to beat the guys that are beating him. It’s just going to put him in a situation where he might try too hard by fighting with anger instead of intelligence. I know if I’m Trout, I’m happy that Canelo wants to get revenge because it means he might not be fighting as smart as he would be if he didn’t have personal reasons for wanting to win this fight.
