Trout: Canelo might as well leave his title belt with me right now

trout335By Dan Ambrose: WBA World junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s) doesn’t see himself having any problems beating the younger 22-year-old, flat-footed WBC 154 lb. title holder Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) in two weeks in their fight on Showtime at the Alamodome, in San Antonio, Texas.

A crowd of 35,000 is expected for the 72,000 seat arena, but Trout isn’t worried about Canelo’s fans changing the outcome out of the fight as long as none of them are allowed in the ring to help him out when things start going downhill for the Mexican fighter.

Trout said to Showtime “He [Canelo] says it’s for revenge, but he might as well leave his belt right here now. He says it’s about revenge, but for me, it’s not about his brother [Rigoberto Alvarez] or his family; it’s always about the belt. I want the world title; he has it, so that’s my motivation.”

Trout defeated Canelo’s brother Rigoberto Alvarez by a 12 round unanimous decision in 2011 when they battled for the World Boxing Association 154 lb. title in February of that year. Trout won the fight by the scores of 119-108, 119-108 and 119-108. In other words, Trout beat Rigoberto 11 rounds to 1. That’s kind of telling because Rigoberto fights with the same flat-footed style that Canelo does, only he’s three inches taller and has a longer reach.

Rigoberto tried to crowd Trout the same way Canelo will, but Trout moved easily and jabbed him in the fast and picked him off with faster shots. It was too easy and it likely gave boxing fans a pretty good idea what lies in store for the 22-year-old Canelo when he steps inside the ring to face Trout in this fight.

Canelo wants revenge for his brother’s loss and that seems to be a major driving force for him in this fight. If you know anything about fighters that are looking to avenge one of their family members getting beaten, you’ll know that it frequently causes the fighter to battle with anger instead of intelligence.

This actually could work against Canelo because he might come out looking to slug and end up getting out-boxed with ease by Trout. Canelo needs to use his brain instead of his brawn in this fight otherwise he’s going to end up just like poor Rigoberto by getting beaten by a lopsided decision.
