The Kimbo Slice Illusion

slice545By James Sexton: Kimbo Slice aka Kevin Ferguson the street fighter and mixed martial artist turned boxer, is 7-0 with 6 knockouts to his name. Thankfully, nobody has bought into this yet. I have not spoken to anyone who has told me that Kimbo Slice is going to be the next big thing in boxing, and with good reason.

In 7 contests he has not fought anyone but tomato cans which he can beat up on. He has looked sluggish and has a low work rate in the ring, with incredibly painful slow hand and foot speed. Often when fights get into the third round Ferguson is visibly fatigued and ceases to throw meaningful punches or gets tagged himself with head shots.

Honestly, I do respect him for what he has done in his time, however the Kimbo Slice that took place in the bare-knuckle street fight videos is a different man to the one who steps into the boxing ring today, and this version of Kimbo has no place fighting. I am not sure if he is making good money from these appearances, and if he is I commend him for that, but if he takes any form of step up in competition he will be in severe trouble unless he can get a first round knockout.

The one thing I will say about him is that he has good power shots in the first round of each of his fights, but if he misses this window of an opportunity against any of the top 100 heavyweights, it will be the end of his boxing ‘career’.

For now I have not read anything about his eight appearance, but as his last fight was at the end of January this year, look for an announcement soon, as his team will want to get as many fights out of him as they can before he his simply too old to be believable as a fighter.

Anyone who followed Ferguson’s MMA career will know that it started well against handpicked opponents, but ultimately ended up badly and in my humble view I see this going much the same way for the faded brawler.
