by James Le Blanc: I have become accustomed to continuously seeing Sergio Martinez’s name go up and down in the top 10 p4p rankings and it irritates me incredibly that he has never reached number one, at least for a short period of time. Since 2010 defeating Kelly Pavlik, Sergio has dominated his opponents, he has dominated his weight class, and he has dominated the sport.
Let’s recap to solidify my argument here. After the fight with Pavlik, Sergio fought a rematch with Paul Williams who had controversially defeated him before. We remember the knockout, the vicious hook that made people worry about the well being of Paul Williams. Since that giant victory over a much feared and over-sized middleweight in Williams, Martinez went on to fight Dzinziruk.
Dzinziruk had never tasted the canvas in his 37-0 boxing career. Martinez made him taste that canvas….5 times!!!. Sergio followed that performance by beating up and knocking out another undefeated foe in Darren Barker.
In route to facing his most recent win in which he stripped Chavez Jr of his hardware Martinez was coming off of 4 straight KO victories. If you saw the Pavlik fight you would probably wonder why that fight wasn’t stopped. And if you watched the Chavez fight you would probably wonder the same thing in which Roach the trainer of Chavez Jr. was very close to calling it a night around the 7th round.
Add that up and that’s 6 KO victories in my book, but literally 4 out of the last 6 fights in which Martinez ended fights early. As a fan I also take into account how much size Martinez gave up to face the undisciplined Chavez jr who was around 190lbs on fight night. What more does Sergio Martinez have to do to get a little respect around here? None of the boxers in front of him on espn’s p4p rankings can say they have performed so well in the past two years.
In wake of his big time win over Chavez Jr, Martinez is set to take on another undefeated fighter. He doesn’t fight chumps; he takes on the better opposition. I like Martinez to win this fight via KO and a match between him and Golovkin or a rematch with Chavez Jr may happen after that. I believe even if he wins those two fights he still won’t get the proper respect he deserves. I respect those that have Floyd and Andre as their number one pound for pound boxer but I am convinced, that no one has been more brilliant in recent years then Martinez and until he doesn’t perform well, I will not consider him anywhere else than at the top spot of my p4p list.
