gamboa4523By Allan Fox: According to ESPN Deportes a fight between IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez (33-3, 13 KO’s) and former IBF/WBA featherweight Yuriokis Gamboa (22-0, 16 KO’s) is in the works for the summer.

Vazquez said to ESPN “They contacted me and offered me a fight with Yuriorkis Gamboa. It’s not yet a fact. We are awaiting whether we’ll be fighting or not. The fight depends on whether we reach a good agreement with my company Zanger…I’m ready to fight Yuriorkis Gamboa.”

The 31-year-old Gamboa’s career is really stagnating at this point. He’s only fought once in the past year in beating Michael Farenas by an impressive 12 round unanimous decision last December. Gamboa was knocked down in that fight and took a lot of hard shots in winning the fight. Gamboa won the fight but he looked hardly impressive at super featherweight.

Vazquez was supposed to have fought WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns but that fight fell apart after Burns left his promoter and switched to a different promoter.

Vazquez says he still wants to fight Burns, as well as the other top champions in the division like WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner and WBA champion Richard Abril. Vazquez wants to unify all the 135 lb. titles and then move up to 140 to campaign as a light welterweight. The chances of Vazquez beating all of the lightweight champions are remote at best. He’ll be lucky if he can even get any of them to fight him because he’s got a style that’s crowd pleasing a lot of fighters don’t want to face a slick guy like him.

Gamboa might have too much speed and fire power for Vazquez to handle. It’ll still be a really tough fight for the short-armed Gamboa because Vazquez will have a 7 inch reach advantage and he’s going to use that advantage to keep Gamboa on the outside as much as possible.

Gamboa needs to be a lot more active if he wants to take advantage of the time he has left in his career. Fighting once a year isn’t going to get the job done.
