Floyd MayweatherBy Chris Williams: With a week and a half to go before his May 4th fight against WBC interim welterweight champion Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KO’s), Floyd Mayweather Jr. (43-0, 26 KO’s) is already at 147 lbs for the fight and has been for the past two days, according to Dan Rafael.

This isn’t Mayweather rehydrating to make 147. He actually weighs 147 and will likely come into the fight weighing that on the night of the fight. This is obviously a great reason why Mayweather can’t fight WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez because this fighter rehydrated up to 172 lbs. and above and that would give him a 25 pound weight advantage over Mayweather if the fight were to be made.

Guerrero will likely rehydrate up to 160 for the fight, but not anymore than that. There’s a big difference between fighting a 160 pounder than fighting a guy that walks around at 172-175 on the night of the fight.

Mayweather said this about Guerrero as quoted by Dan Rafael: “He’s [Guerrero’] more like a wrestler than a boxer. Once I left Top Rank I felt free.”

Mayweather is going to have to figure out a way to keep from getting roughed up and mugged by Guerrero on the inside because Guerrero did a great job of holding and hitting his last opponent Andre Berto last November. Guerrero normally isn’t a big puncher, but when he’d holding onto his opponent’s head and hitting him at the same time, he can generate some good power with that kind of punching. The referee for the fight Robert Byrd is going to have to keep a close eye on Guerrero because he could hurt Mayweather if he’s allowed to foul him over and over again.

Hopefully this fight is a clean one, but I think Guerrero could take into the gutter if he starts getting outclassed by Mayweather the way that Victor Ortiz was two years ago. Ortiz couldn’t handle it and resorted to head-butting Mayweather and that move backfired on him because the referee Joe Cortez did his job by taking a point a way from Ortiz.
