Mayweather wants to fight in UK; Khan the obvious target

mayweather2256By Scott Gilfoid: Floyd Mayweather Jr’s adviser Leonard Ellerbe is saying that Mayweather Jr. plans on fighting in the UK at some point in the near future. He doesn’t say who Mayweather will be fighting but it seems pretty clear that Amir Khan will be the target for Mayweather because it would be pointless for him to fight Kell Brook or the other little known welterweights and light welterweights in the UK.

Khan is the only game in town for Mayweather, but he better make that fight quick because Khan could get knocked out in his next fight if he’s serious about wanting to fight for a world title.

Ellerbe said to ESPN “Floyd cannot wait we can come over there and give the UK fans a big, big fight. Floyd has a tremendous fan base in the UK, and we’re looking at working on something now where he’s going to come over there…his focus is Saturday night, but then we’ll go from there.”

Judging by Ellerbe’s comments, we could possibly see Mayweather fighting in the UK before the end of the year. That would work out great for Khan because he doesn’t plan on fighting until December. I’m not sure if that would work out for Mayweather because he’s got to fight 6 times in the next 30 months, so he’s going to have to have to fight a little more often than just twice a year if he wants to get all six fights in within the next 30 months.

Khan barely beat Julio Diaz last Saturday night by a 12 round unanimous decision in Sheffield, UK, and was even knocked down in that fight in the 4th. The way Khan looked in that fight, I can’t see him beating the guys that he’s mentioned – Danny Garcia, Lamont Peterson, Devon Alexander and Lucas Matthysse – for his next fight.

For that reason, Mayweather is going to have to jump on the Khan fight as soon as possible if Mayweather gets by Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero this Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. That’s a big IF for Mayweather because he might lose that fight. If he loses, he’ll probably fight Guerrero again in his next fight.

Mayweather obviously must know from seeing Khan’s struggle against Diaz last Saturday that he doesn’t have much more time to fight Khan before the British fighter is no longer considered a relevant fighter. Khan seems to be going downhill at this point in his career, and I suspect he’ll wind up as a journeyman within a couple of years. His chin, which was never good to begin with, seems even more brittle now. Mayweather must make the Khan fight after the Guerrero fight if he wants to get Khan before he gets knocked out again.
