Mayweather: This is the longest I’ve trained for any fight

floyd#1By Chris Williams: Floyd Mayweather Jr. (43-0, 26 KO’s) is vowing to be in the best shape of his life when he meets WBC interim welterweight champion Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KO’s) on May 4th in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Instead of getting worse with age, Mayweather sees himself getting better at 36, and he’s worked harder in this training camp than in any previous camp.

Mayweather hasn’t fought in a year and he needs to train hard to make up for lost time so that his fight with Guerrero will be a lot easier than his last one was against junior middleweight Miguel Cotto last May.

Mayweather said to Mlive.com: “I’ve been pushing myself in training camp. My body has never looked the same as it’s going to look for this fight. This is the longest I’ve trained for any fight.”

Mayweather’s training has paid off because he’s looking the lightest he’s been in quite some time. The bulky muscles that Mayweather had put on for the Cotto fight are now gone and he once again looks like the wiry, speedy fighter that he’d been in the past.

The only question with Mayweather taking weight off is whether it will affect him negatively because he can’t afford to be weight drained against Guerrero because this fight will likely be a long grueling 12 round fight due to Guerrero’s strong chin. Guerrero may be slow, upright and predictable, but he does have a good chin and can take a mean shot and keep coming forward all night long.

Mayweather doesn’t need to get involved in a back and forth fight like Guerrero’s last opponent Andre Berto because that would be playing to Guerrero’s strengths instead of his weaknesses. There are fighters such as Orlando Salido who were able to beat Guerrero at his own game, but Mayweather isn’t going to fight that kind of fight because it’ll require that he takes a lot of shots.
