Mayweather talks Pacquiao and Guerrero

mayweather223By Chris Williams: Floyd Mayweather Jr. was interviewed today by CBS Sports and he discussed his upcoming May 4th fight against WBC interim welterweight champion Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero and he also explained one of the reasons why a fight between him and Pacquiao hasn’t been made as of yet.

Mayweather said to CBS Sports today: “I feel good. I’ve been off a year now. I want to go out there and give fans what they want to see. Robert Guerrero, he’s a solid, solid tough competitor. He’s from the Bay Area in California. He’s a very, very busy fighter. He’s strong, he’s solid. We’ll just see what he brings to the table on May 4th. We don’t know [how he’ll fight Guerrero]. We got to see what the game plan is. My dad totally believes that the less you get hit the longer you last in the sport, and I’ve been able to last 17 years, which is a great thing. [when asked how long he’ll continue his career]. 30 months. Manny Pacquiao has a lot of hurdles to get to Floyd Mayweather. He just got two back to back losses. I tried to make the fight happen. The only thing I was asking for was random blood and urine testing just to show the world that the sport of boxing is a clean sport.”

Guerrero does throw a lot of punches, and it’s smart that Mayweather is realizing that it’s better for him to listen to his father Floyd Mayweather Sr. by using his boxing skills to win this fight instead of getting in the trench to fight his opponent’s fight. Mayweather did that in his last fight against Miguel Cotto and he took a lot of punishment in winning a 12 round unanimous decision. Mayweather isn’t built for that style of fighting and it’s smart for him to go back to boxing these guys because fans will appreciate him no matter how he fights.

Mayweather has six fights he’s got to get out of the way in the next 30 months in his contract with Showtime/CBS, so he can’t afford to be getting into the trenches and suffering cuts and broken bones against fighters that don’t have the same skills as him and who are just looking to score a knockout because they can’t match up.
