Mayweather Jr. suffers a bloody nose in sparring for Guerrero fight

floyd32By Allan Fox: Floyd Mayweather Jr. suffered a bloody nose last Friday during a sparring session to get ready for his fight this Saturday night against Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. According to AP, Mayweather was nailed by a forearm that somehow was able to get in between his head-gear during the sparring session and bloody his nose.

Luckily for Mayweather, his nose wasn’t broken from the shot, but it’s still a dangerous thing to happen this close to the fight. An injury to Mayweather’s nose would cause the fight to be postponed and that would be bad news for everyone, especially Mayweather because he’s got 30 months to fulfill a six-fight contract with Showtime/CBS.

Mayweather was unconcerned about the bloody nose, saying to the Associated Press “It’s ok, it’s boxing.”

Mayweather’s father, Floyd Sr, wasn’t pleased with the incident and reportedly had some words with the sparring partner about it.

Guerrero figures to be a tough opponent for Mayweather due to his youth, size and workrate. Guerrero isn’t fast and doesn’t have a lot of power, but he’s got great stamina and an excellent work rate. Those kinds of things wouldn’t have bothered a younger Mayweather but he’s no longer young now that he’s 36, and showing signs of age.

Mayweather isn’t helped by the fact that he’s been out of the ring for a year. He didn’t look good the last time he fought last year in May against Miguel Cotto, and being off for a year can’t have helped things for Mayweather.

His fans think Mayweather looked bad against Cotto because he was fighting a larger guy and fighting him in the wrong way by going toe-to-toe with him. But you can’t mistake how heavy-legged Mayweather looked in that fight for the entire bout.

If he was just intentionally choosing to slug it out with Cotto to show that he could beat him using Cotto’s style, Mayweather should have been able to show some flashes of his old form, but it wasn’t there. He looked like a fighter that is on the verge of being over the hill.

The Mayweather that fought Cotto would have a ton of problems against Guerrero. But an even older Mayweather, which is what we could see this Saturday night, might end up losing to Guerrero and taking a beating in the process.
