1330By Allan Fox: On May 18th, IBF light welterweight champion Lamont Peterson (31-1-1, 16 KO’s) will be defending his title in one of his toughest fights of his 9-year pro career against Lucas Matthysse (33-2, 31 KO’s) at the Boardwalk Hall, in Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA.

Interestingly enough, the fight will take place at a catch-weight of 141 pounds. Presumably this is a move to accommodate Matthysse because he looked pretty big after rehydrating in his last fight against Mike Dallas Jr. last January. Matthysse ran Dallas Jr. down in stopping him in the 1st round.

If Matthysse fights like that on May 18th then it’s going to be awfully hard for Peterson to win this fight because he’s only been in with a couple of punchers in his career in fights against Victor Ortiz and Kendall Holt, and he had some problems against Ortiz early in the fight.

Matthysse can be out-boxed, as we saw in his loss to Zab Judah three years ago and that’s probably what Peterson will be attempting to do. He’d be crazy to stand in front of Matthysse like he did against Holt and Amir Khan because Matthysse hits too hard and he likes to go toe-to-toe with his opponents.

Peterson has a good jab and he can move well around the ring when he wants to. The only question is can he resist the impulse to slug. He seems to invite his opponents to exchange with him, and he’s gotten away with it thus far because his opponents for the most part didn’t have the power to make him pay.

Matthysse does and he could knock Peterson out if he chooses to slug with him.

Also on the card, IBF welterweight champion Devon Alexander (24-1, 13 KO’s) will be defending his title against unbeaten #1 WBO Kell Brook (29-0, 19 KO’s). This fight is a toss up. Brook has the power advantage, but Alexander is a great boxer and he’s good at avoiding getting hit.
