santana2By Jim Dower: In something of a surprise, lightweight Bahodir Mamadjonov (13-1, 9 KO’s) defeated #3 WBA, Angelo Santana (14-1, 11 KO’s) by a 9th round TKO on Friday night to capture the vacant WBA International lightweight title at the Treasure Island Casino, in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.

he fight was one-sided from the start as southpaw Mamadjonov was able to tag Santana with left hands at will in every round and pepper him with jabs. The fact that Santana was the highly ranked fighter and not Mamadjonov seemed like a mix up on the sanctioning bodies part because Mamadjonov was by far the better fighter of the two.

In the 8th round, Mamadjonov knocked Santana down with some hard shots to the body. Santana looked mentally finished by that point in the fight anyway, so it wasn’t a complete surprise that he was knocked down. In the 9th, Mamadjonov dropped Santana two times in the round before the fight was finally halted at 0:51 of the round by referee Kenny Bayless.

In other action on the card, light heavyweight Marcus Oliveira (25-0-1, 20 KO’s) defeated previously unbeaten Ryan Coyne (20-1, 9 KO’s) by an 11th round TKO in the 11th round in their WBA light heavyweight eliminator. Coyne, who had been mentioned as a possible opponent for WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly recently before the fight was blocked by promotional issues for Coyne, was knocked down twice in the 11th round by Oliveira.

Other boxing results on the card:

Amir Imam KO2 Jeremy Bryan
Marcus Willis MD 8 James De La Rosa
Trevor Bryan UD 6 Alvaro Morales
