Macklin wants Sergio Martinez rematch if he beats Golovkin on 6/29

macklin4323By Scott Gilfoid: Matthew Macklin (29-4, 20 KO’s) is looking past his next fight against WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (26-0, 23 KO’s) on June 29th towards a rematch against WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez, who knocked Macklin out in the 11th round last March in New York.

Macklin figures that all he has to do is beat Golovkin and then he’ll get the Martinez rematch.

Macklin said to fightnews.com “Me beating him [Golovin] will throw me straight back into a rematch with Sergio Martinez. I know next time if I were to fight Sergio, I’d beat him.”

There’s just one problem with Macklin’s vision thing: he’s going to likely lose to Golovkin and lose badly. I mean, I want to give Macklin the benefit of the doubt just like anyone out there, but the problem is I’ve seen too many of his fights and I know what his limitations are. He’s simply out of his class against Golovkin. This is a mismatch straight up.

Macklin figures he’ll be able to give Golovkin some problems like he briefly did with Martinez with his movement, but Golovkin has seen fighters that fight on their back foot and look to spoil. All he’s going to do is expertly cut off the ring on Macklin and force him into situations where he’s going to have to exchange with him and take heavy, heavy shots to the head and body.

In another amusing comment, Macklin says once he beats Golovkin, he might choose to defend the WBA strap against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. before facing Martinez in a rematch.

You’ve got to like the way that Macklin has it all planned out. He’s not just looking at the Golovkin fight and praying that he wins it; he’s got two fights already planned, as if a victory over Golovkin is a foregone conclusion. It kind of reminds me Amir Khan in a way with him planning all these important fights ahead of time when he couldn’t even get past Danny Garcia.

Golovkin vs. Macklin fight will be taking place at the MGM Grand at Foxwoods Resort, in Mashantucket, Connecticut, USA.
