329(Photo credit GeoIMAGEZ) By Scott Gilfoid: Matthew Macklin (29-4, 20 KO’s) says he’s going to not only beat WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (26-0, 23 KO’s) when he meets him on June 29th, but he’s also going to knock him out as well in their fight at the MGM Grand at Foxwoods Resort, in Mashantucket, Connecticut, USA.

Macklin said this at his press conference today with Golovkin: “He is going to lose on June 29th…I am going to knock GGG out…I am by far the biggest puncher he has ever fought in his life.”

Macklin the biggest puncher that Golovkin has faced? I think not. Golovkin has fought Andre Dirrell, Grzegorz Proksa, Lucian Bute and Matt Karobov, to name just a tiny handful of guys that have more power than Macklin does.

In just looking over Golovkin’s amateur career, I can see 10 other fighters with arguably better power than Macklin and the only reason I didn’t list them here is because I don’t want my entire article to be one long list of fighters with better power than Macklin.

What surprised me about the press conference is how short Macklin is. I had always figured that he was a little taller than the 5’10” Golovkin, but when the two stood in a face off you could see that Golovkin was the taller fighter by at least an inch, possibly a little more than that. This means that Macklin’s listed 5’10” height is a little off. He must be 5’9” or 5’8 ½”. Either that or Golovkin is 5’11” and not the listed 5’10”.

I don’t think Golovkin is worried about Macklin’s power at all because the guy isn’t going to stay around long enough for him to get hit all that much. Golovkin is going to be right on Macklin tagging him with big shots and I have a feeling that Macklin won’t even see the 3rd round unless he puts his track shoes on and runs for daylight.

This is a bad mismatch between Macklin is basically a slugger and he only has one way to fight and that’s by coming forward. When Macklin tries to run like he did against Sergio Martinez, he does a poor job of it and still gets tagged a lot.
