selby45By Jamie E: British and Commonwealth featherweight champion Lee Selby (15-1, 6 KO’s) seems to have all the tools to make it all the way to the top, scratch beneath the surface though and is he really equipped to take on the world?

Lee Selby is a very accomplished fighter and has taken apart most of the opposition at domestic level with consummate ease. Although very impressive with the way he has taken care of business thus far, could it actually prove to be a hindrance?

The 26 year old featherweight from Barry South Wales has compiled a record of 14 wins from 15 having suffered a defeat in his 5th fight to Samir Mouneimne. Since then, however, he has looked very good. He is the current British and commonwealth champion at featherweight claiming the titles with an 8 round stoppage of the overwhelming favourite Stephen Smith in the champions backyard of Liverpool.

Seemingly coming from nowhere Selby looks a concussive puncher and very big at the weight. If he keeps progressing at the rate he has so far he really could be the next big thing.

Although the featherweight division looks very competitive particularly the top 5, with the unbeaten Chris John (who personally I think is on the slide), Miguel Garcia and Juan Manuel Lopez possibly looking the pick of the bunch, I really don’t see anything to fear for the likeable Welshman.

He talks a good game and has trained at Floyd Mayweathers’ gym and seemingly held his own. He also says he spars with fighters at much bigger weights including heavyweight to test his punch resistance. With his dedication, power and conditioning with the right career management from British promotion stable Matchroom, he really could be a breakout star of 2013.
