khan1By Scott Gilfoid: Amir Khan (27-3, 19 KO’s) will be fighting this Saturday night against Julio Diaz (40-7-1, 29 KO’s) in what should be Khan’s last tune-up fight before he’s thrown back in with the sharks of the light welterweight division.

If Khan gets past the 33-year-old Diaz then he will have had two easy fights to build up his confidence to get him ready to start fighting the quality fighters in the 140 lb. division. If Khan can’t cut the mustard again then Golden Boy Promotions is going to have to seriously consider cutting him loose unless they’re okay with him being a gate keeper/Euro level fighter.

I fully expect Khan to get past Diaz on Saturday because all signals point to this being an easy fight considering that Diaz hasn’t beaten high level opposition for the past six years or more. He’s been kind of out of it for eons and he seems to be just another sacrificial lamb that Golden Boy is dragging in for Khan to slaughter.

The idea by Diaz being selected is the long-term hardcore boxing fans will know the guy and perhaps be interested in the fight. Unfortunately, the younger boxing fans likely won’t have clue one who Diaz is because he’s not been seen a lot of such a long, long time.

For Khan’s sake he better hope he doesn’t get knocked out in this fight because if he suffers another loss then he can pretty much pack it in. Diaz isn’t a big puncher but he’s got respectable power and if he can connect to Khan’s fragile chin then anything can happen. The fight will be televised in both the UK and the United States, so that if Khan gets knocked out again then a lot of boxing fans will get to see it.

Khan has lost two out of his last three fights and looked terrible in all three. He got beat by Lamont Peterson in a foul plagued fight, and then he got knocked out by Danny Garcia. Golden Boy then had to put the training wheels back on Khan and put him in with a smaller lightweight without a top 15 ranking in Carlos Molina in order to stop Khan’s losing streak. It worked, but he still looked like the same fighter that was beaten by Breidis Prescott, Peterson and Garcia. There was no improvement in his game and the only difference was that he was facing an easy mark.
