Khan: If I get hurt by Diaz I’ll keep my technique

khan33By Scott Gilfoid: Former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (27-3, 19 KO’s) has taken heat for the way he sometimes doesn’t do the right thing when he’s been shook up by a big punch. Instead of grabbing his opponents to try and hold on until he recovers from the shot, Khan has tried to keep slugging.

Khan got away with this in his fight against Marcos Maidana in 2010, but it may have cost him the fight last July when he was stopped in the 4th round by Danny Garcia after being badly hurt in the previous round.

Khan said to RingTV “If I get caught then I’ll retain the technique we’ve [Khan and trainer Virgil Hunter] been working on.”
Khan faces Julio Diaz (40-7-1, 29 KO’s) this month on April 27th at the Motorpoint Arena, Sheffield, Yorkshire, United Kingdom.

Diaz isn’t a big puncher and you’ve got to give Khan’s promoters at Golden Boy Promotions a lot of credit for doing a good job of finding another safe 2nd tier fighter for Khan to fight instead of a relevant top tier world class fighter.

Golden Boy has put Khan in a good position to where he’ll look good again and won’t get knocked out like he was against Danny Garcia and Breidis Prescott.

As far as Khan keeping his technique if he gets hurt, I don’t know that it’ll matter unless there’s a referee working the fight that will get in between Khan and Diaz for three rounds like the referee that worked Khan’s fight with Maidana.

If Khan gets badly hurt against Diaz the same way he did against Danny Garcia, I don’t know if even holding on will help him.

It’s not as if Khan can hold on for three minutes of every round after he’s hurt and he still wasn’t recovered in the next round in the Garcia fight. If Diaz is able to rock Khan in the same fashion then the only thing that will be able to save Khan is one of those referees that literally runs interference for Khan by getting in between him and Diaz and pulls Diaz off of Khan over and over again each time Khan’s getting it while against the ropes.
