Haye targeting Tyson Fury

fury444By Scott Gilfoid: Tyson Fury’s poor performance in beating Steve Cunningham last Saturday night in New York seems to have changed former WBA heavyweight champion David Haye’s mind about not wanting to fight him. Haye’s manager/trainer Adam Booth says they want to set up a fight against the big 6’9” [or 6’7”] Fury in the Autumn after Haye takes a tune-up fight on June 29th at the Manchester Arena in the UK.

Booth said to thesun.co.uk “David [Haye] against Fury is the most natural heavyweight fight out there. It is the most logical high profile fight in Great Britain, if not the world, right now…it would be massive. I am waiting to make contact with Fury’s promoter.”

It doesn’t take a genius to see why Haye and Booth have had a change of heart about wanting to fight Fury. All you have to do is watch how vulnerable Fury looked against Cunningham to know that he’s an easy mark for someone like Haye to destroy.

Cunningham knocked Fury down with a right hand in the 2nd and would have likely finished him off if he had hit just one more time instead of clinching him for the rest of the round. It was as if the effort to throw that one punch exhausted Cunningham because he hanging all over Fury after that instead of the other way around.

Fury is clearly there to be hurt by someone like Haye because he can’t control the distance with his size despite being a huge fighter, and his inside game consists him shoving his opponents and holding and hitting. Even at that, Fury doesn’t have the power to do much against anyone halfway decent.

I don’t blame Booth and Haye for licking their chops at the thought of getting Fury in the ring to expose him because his fight against Cunningham made it painfully obvious that Fury doesn’t have the talent to get to the next level. I hate to say it but he makes Haye sensational in comparison. I can’t see Fury lasting more than one round against Haye if he comes out fast and looking to slug.

Haye and Booth might not get to Fury in time if they’re serious about wanting to fight him later on in the year because Kubrat Pulev will likely have knocked Fury out before then. If I’m Haye and Booth, I’d be pressing hard to get Fury to take the fight on June 29th instead of someone else because they’ll be kicking themselves afterwards when Pulev does a number on Fury.

Haye needs to get to Fury before Pulev or one of the other heavyweights in the top 15 because you can see that Fury won’t make out of 2013 without getting royally spanked by someone. It might as well be Haye because at least he’d get a nice little payday in whipping him.
