Guerrero: Mayweather’s legs are starting to get slower; he knows it

guerrero112By Dan Ambrose: WBC interim welterweight champion Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KO’s) is convinced that Floyd Mayweather Jr. (43-0, 26 KO’s) has lost a couple of steps and isn’t the same fighter he once was in his prime.

Guerrero believes that Mayweather has slowed down enough to where he’s now ready to be taken down and beaten for the first time in his 17-year pro career.

Guerrero said “His legs are starting to get slower. He’s not moving the way he used to. He knows.”

On May 4th, the 29-year-old Guerrero will get his shot against Mayweather when the two of them enter the ring for a Showtime/CBS pay per view bout at the MGM Grand, Grand Garden Arena, in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.

There’s no question that Mayweather isn’t as fast as he was 15 years ago. He’s slower and he doesn’t move nearly as well as he did when he was campaigning as a super featherweight, but Mayweather is still plenty fast and he can do a lot of things that Guerrero could never hope to do even at 36.

The speed difference is one thing, but what makes Mayweather so good is his ring intelligence. He’s always been a very smart fighter and his loss of foot and hand speed hasn’t affected his boxing brain. He knows exactly what to do in the ring and when to do it. It’s going to be very tough for Guerrero to match Mayweather in this area because he’s not in the same class as him in terms of ring smarts.

Mayweather said “There’s not a blueprint in how to beat Floyd Mayweather, but there is a blueprint in how to beat Robert Guerrero.”

The guys that have given Guerrero problems – Daud Cino Yordan, Orlando Salido and Gamaliel Diaz – got the better of him with pressure. Mayweather isn’t going to beat Guerrero like that. He’s going to use a completely different tact. It’s going to likely work because Guerrero has never faced anyone like Mayweather before, so he’s not going to know how to react to what he brings to the ring on May 4th.
