Guerrero: I’m not one of Mayweather’s hand-picked opponents

Robert Guerrero(Photo credit: Esther Lin) By Dan Ambrose: For Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KO’s) he feels that it’s important that boxing fans know that he’s not just one of the safe fights for Floyd Mayweather Jr. (43-0, 26 KO’s) that has been selected to keep him undefeated. Guerrero believes in his mind that he’s been picked out for his talent, and not because he’s considered a slapper without power at 147.

Guerrero said on Tuesday: “For one, I’m not one of Mayweather’s hand-picked opponents. We’re not making an attempt. We’re going to come out victorious on Saturday night. We Latinos have pressure all the time. We have pressure when we fight all the time. We’re going to come out and take care of business. All you’re going to hear is ‘May Day, May Day, Guerrero’s in the ring.’ That’s it.”

The truth is Guerrero IS one of Mayweather’s hand-picked opponents. He chose to fight Guerrero rather than giving up the WBC title, which has little meaning for him because he’s beyond titles at this point in his career and doesn’t need it for him to make big money.

Mayweather selected Guerrero to fight because he wanted a guy that isn’t dangerous, doesn’t have big power, and who would help attract Mexican fans for the Cinco de Mayo holiday on May 4th.

For Mayweather there really wasn’t much for him to choose from in terms of fighters with Mexican heritage at 147 unless he wanted to fight the 172 pound Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, and that would be light choosing to fight a super middleweight.

Since Mayweather wasn’t interested in fighting a guy three divisions heavier than him in Canelo, he chose Guerrero because he’s an actual welterweight and he fits the requirements that Mayweather has for this fight. So, whether Guerrero wants to acknowledge it or not, he IS a hand-picked opponent for Mayweather because the options for Mayweather wouldn’t have been that great for him if he wanted to attract a lot of Mexican fans.

Mayweather wasn’t going to fight the recently knocked out Josesito Lopez, and he couldn’t fight him anyway because he’s already scheduled to fight Marcos Maidana. Mayweather wouldn’t fight Victor Ortiz again because he already stopped him in the 4th round in 2011.
