Guerrero gets Mayweather fight: Can he take advantage of it?

guerrero1By Dan Ambrose: WBC interim welterweight champion Robert Guerrero (31-1, 18 KO’s) has the big money title shot that he’s been asking for against WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (43-0, 26 KO’s) on May 4th, but now the question is can Guerrero take advantage of his opportunity because this may be his only shot at a mega fight in his career.

If he can’t beat Mayweather then that’s likely going to be Guerrero’s only opportunity because Mayweather isn’t going to bother fighting him again if he beats him, especially when Mayweather is the one bringing in all the fans for this fight.

Guerrero may luck out and get a title shot against WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in the future if Guerrero is willing to move up in weight to fight Canelo at 154 and if Canelo doesn’t get beaten by WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout this month on April 20th.

Even if Canelo does get beat by Trout, Golden Boy will likely match Guerrero up with Canelo in the future simply because they’re both Golden Boy fighters and Golden Boy likes to have a lot of in house fights just like Top Rank.

Guerrero is going to need to really put it on Mayweather if he wants to win this fight. What we saw of Guerrero beating Andre Berto last year won’t be enough to get the job done. Guerrero was far too slow and upright in that fight for him to beat Mayweather, and the situation will be a lot different.

One of the keys in Guerrero beating Berto was the fouling that he was able to get away with due to the referee playing the part of a passive spectator instead of doing his job.

Guerrero won’t be able to count on the referee just standing there like a bump on a log doing nothing as Guerrero tries to rough Mayweather up in different ways.

Guerrero will have to fight a clean fight, and I really don’t think he can beat Maywather fighting cleanly. I think it’s a mismatch unless Guerrero can come up with some new tools that he’s not show in any of his other fights in his career. Is it possible for 29-year-old fighter like Guerrero to find new skills in one training camp to beat someone like Mayweather? No, I don’t think it is but that’s what Guerrero is going to need to do if he wants to win this fight.
