Golovkin wants Canelo after Macklin fight

canelo66By Dan Ambrose: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (26-0, 23 KO’s) reportedly wants to face WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) after Golovkin gets finished dispatching contender Matthew Macklin (29-4, 20 KO’s) on June 29th in their fight at the MGM Grand at the Foxwoods Resort, in Mashantucket, Connecticut.

Golovkin, 31, says he’ll even come down to 154 lbs. to make the fight easier for the 22-year-old Canelo to make. Now the question is whether Canelo and his promoters at Golden Boy Promotions will agree to take the fight with Golovkin or if they’ll see this as too dangerous of a fight because Golovkin would likely rehydrate to the mid-160s and that wouldn’t give Canelo much of a weight advantage like he’d have if he fought Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Golovkin punches harder than Canelo and he doesn’t mind getting hit in order to land his own big shots. If Canelo chose to take off major portions of every round like he did against Austin Trout last Saturday night I think it would badly for Canelo.

The judges would be spectators in this fight, so Golden Boy could have the fight take place in Texas with the same judges that scored Canelo’s win over Trout and it likely wouldn’t matter because Golovkin would bring his own judges to the fight in with his two fists.

Sadly, I don’t think Golden Boy or Canelo will agree to face Golovkin because he’s too damn dangerous. He punches a lot harder than Trout and Canelo’s pot shots wouldn’t be enough to turn him away.

With Golovkin landing many power shots in comparison to Canelo, it wouldn’t matter if they open scoring or semi-open scoring because the judges would have no choice but to give Golovkin the rounds because there wouldn’t be the excuse that Canelo is landing the harder shots and he definitely wouldn’t throw as many punches.

Golovkin is a vicious body puncher, so if Canelo decides to move his head and try and play defense like he did last Saturday night when he had a huge lead, Golovkin would simply take out his wide body. Canelo can’t dodge body shots because he’s not a good mover. He’s more of a retreat to the ropes type of fighter, which is kind of strange given that he’s only 22-years-old and is already having stamina problems.
