macklin56556By Scott Gilfoid: Negotiations are reportedly underway for a fight between WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (26-0, 23 KO’s) and #2 WBC, #14 WBA Matthew Macklin (29-4, 20 KO’s) for June 29th at a still to be determined venue in New York.

Macklin, 30, won’t be getting the fight that he wanted against former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. so he’s going to have to settle for facing the hard hitting 30-year-old Golovkin instead.

This fight has the makings of a massacre for Golovkin unless Macklin suddenly improves dramatically from the fighter that was destroyed by Sergio Martinez last year in an 11th round stoppage. Macklin fought defensively in that fight and when he finally stopped running and tried to fight, he was blown out in the 11th round.

Against Golovkin, Macklin will likely have to adopt the same defensive posture of running and trying not to get hit because if he stops and trades early on it’s going to be a slaughter. Golovkin has too much power and talent for him to deal with in a one-on-one battle and the best that Macklin can really hope for is to get a lucky KO. I can’t that happening in this lifetime.

Golovkin looked sensational in his fight last Saturday night in Monte Carlo in which he stopped Nobuhiro Ishida in the 3rd round. What was so impressive about that fight wasn’t that Golovkin won the fight, but rather how he won by knocking Ishida out. Ishida had never been knocked out before during his 13-year pro career and Golovkin had Ishida in trouble in the 2nd before finishing him off in the 3rd with a peach of a right hand to the head.

I think Macklin is going to be lucky to see the 4th round if he plays it macho and comes out swinging like he did in his last fight against Joachim Alcine. Macklin won the fight by a 1st round knockout last September. God, I hope Macklin fights Golovkin like he did Alcine because it’ll be interesting for at least a couple of rounds before Golovkin knocks Macklin’s lights out. I just don’t want to see the running that Macklin did against Martinez. That was so awful to look at.
