canelo11By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions are looking to put together a fight between former three division world champion Miguel Cotto (37-4, 30 KO’s) and WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) for September 14th.

According to ESPN Deportes, talks have already begun between Cotto and Golden Boy to make the fight happen. According to their sources, the Cotto-Canelo fight could take place at the Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

The stadium seats 80,000, and if Canelo chooses to have tickets sold for $10 again, then it’s possible he could bring in a crowd of 40,000 like he did for his last fight against former WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout this month.

Cotto doesn’t have a huge fan base in Texas, but the crowd would have to be expected to be at least the same size as Canelo’s last fight in San Antonio, Texas.

I don’t see the crowd being much bigger than 40,000, though, and they could end up wasting a lot of seats by having it staged there rather than a smaller stadium. Of course, if Canelo wants to slash the ticket prices even further than $10 by making them only $5 per ticket, then I could see them bringing in 60,000 fans for the fight.

Fighting in an economical manner throughout, Canelo defeated Trout by a 12 round unanimous decision by the scores of 115-112, 116-111 and 118-109. Canelo looked tired in the 2nd half of the fight, and rarely threw punches. He was badly out-worked by Trout, but the judges still gave Canelo the win despite the fact that Trout out-punched and out-landed him.

It’s unclear whether Cotto will agree to Texas and the likely open scoring that the World Boxing Council may be using for the fight. It might be a tough ask to have the fight take place in Texas after the controversy with Canelo’s win over Trout, but then to have open scoring, I think Cotto might have a tough time agreeing to both of those things.

Cotto has to be looked like a step down for Canelo because Trout easily beat Cotto last December. It would seem like the wiser thing for Canelo to do would be for him to fight Trout a second time if his intention is to fight the best in the sport rather than just looking to land money fights against guys that are starting to show signs of fading.
