Essential Reasons Why Pacquiao Should Switch To Golden Boy or TMT

pac454By Miguel Alejandro Lopez: Manny Pacquiao (55-5-1), arguably the best pound for pound boxing superstar prior to two recent heartbreaking defeats, has enough reasons to call it quits with his current promotional stable – Top Rank Promotions.

The first plausible reason for leaving Top Rank is lack of new competition. Bob Arum, the head honcho of Top Rank, is known for keeping his fighters in-house. This means that for many years, fans will see the same guys fighting each other. And with the lack of viable opponents, reruns of each fight will be inevitable. Right now, Pacquiao is only being presented with the options of facing Marquez or Bradley again in 2014, and either Rios or Alvarado in 2013.

One of the best ways to revive Pacquiao’s career is to get himself in front of more challenges and fresh competition, and there are plenty of guys to fight in the welterweight and super welterweight division. The problem is, these fighters are being managed by other promotional companies aside from Top Rank.

There are plenty of good opponents currently managed by Golden Boy Promotions, like Robert Guerrero, Devon Alexander, Austin Trout, Canelo Alvarez, Sergio Martinez and many others. There are also a lot of promising boxers in TNT Promotions (currently being run by Curtis Jackson a.k.a. 50 Cent). Pacquiao can really get back in the game well if he can make a tough fight with any of these guys, instead of being shortchanged with only a few possible opponents in Top Rank.

The second, and possibly the most important reason why Pacquiao should leave Top Rank, is to get closer to the megafight with Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Contrary to what many boxing fans believe, Mayweather Jr. wants to fight Manny Pacquiao. The only hurdle that both fighters face is the bitter rivalry between their promotional stables (Top Rank and Golden Boy). While Mayweather is his own boss.

If Pacquiao leaves Top Rank, Mayweather will no longer have to deal with Bob Arum and real negotiations can take place between the two camps.

And as a congressman and an 11-time world champion, Pacquiao should really think it over because right now, he is not getting what he deserves. His contract with Top Rank is expiring in 2014.
