Donaire’s trainer: Rigondeaux will fight nervous and scared

donaire222By Chris Williams: Robert Garcia, the trainer for WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire (31-1, 20 KO’s), believes that his opponent WBA super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux (11-0, 8 KO’s) doesn’t deserve the fight with Donaire and he sees him as being little more than a nervous ball of energy on Saturday at the Radio City Music Hall in New York, New York.

Garcia said to the Boxingchannel.com “I don’t think he [Rigondeaux] deserves it [the fight]. I don’t think he’s got a shot…this is going to be an easy fight for Donaire. Rigondeaux is going to fight nervous, scared…I know boxing.”

Garcia reminds one a lot of trainer Freddie Roach with the angle that he seems to take where Donaire’s opposition don’t deserve the fights against him and are totally over-matched. If Garcia truly believes this then I guess maybe Donaire is fighting in the wrong division.

If everyone is undeserving of a fight with him, including unbeaten fighters like Rigondeaux, then maybe Donaire needs to move up to featherweight or better yet lightweight and try his hands at fighting those guys.

Garcia ruled out a fight between Donaire and his brother Mikey Garcia because they train in the same camp.

I think Garcia is going to be in for a rude awakening on Saturday night when he discovers that Donaire isn’t as good as he originally thought he was and that the soft matchmaking that his promoter Bob Arum has done for him has given a wrong picture of his true talent.

We saw Donaire struggle against Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. and get his face badly messed up by the young Vazquez Jr. in that fight.

Donaire didn’t look impressive against Jeffrey Mathebula. We saw Donaire struggle against Rafael Concepcion and Omar Narvaez. So what happened there? Why didn’t Donaire destroy these guys? I can imagine what Garcia would say. He’s likely say because those guys are so much better than Rigondeaux. I don’t buy it, but if Garcia does believe that then he’s going to be an unhappy camper on Saturday night when Rigondeaux puts Donaire in his place by knocking him out and shocking Garcia back to reality. Things like this are good because at least Garcia won’t be under the impression that guys like Rigondeaux are underserving of a fight with Donaire. When I hear people talking like this it leaves you with the impression that success has gone to their heads and they’re seeing things in a distorted way. Rigondeaux will snap Garcia back to reality and I think it’ll be good for him.
