Donaire to have shoulder surgery; will move up to featherweight for next fight

donaire147By Allan Fox: Former WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire may be out of action for some time, as he plans on having shoulder surgery to repair torn ligaments in his left shoulder that he says occurred around three years ago and it bothering him a lot.

In addition to that, Donaire will be spending time with his pregnant wife who is expecting their first child together. When Donaire does return to the ring in 2013, he plans on moving up to 126 to campaign as a featherweight due to him having problems making weight for the super bantamweight division.

Donaire was beaten by WBA super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux last Saturday night by a close 12 round unanimous decision at the Radio City Music Hall in New York, New York.

Donaire attributed the loss to him not studying Rigondeaux’s past fights, his preexisting shoulder injury, and not changing his game plan to start using his jab when it was clear that he wouldn’t be able to knock Rigondeaux out.

Donaire said after the fight: “I needed surgery on my shoulder for the last three fights. I’m not taking anything away from Rigondeaux, but I needed surgery on my shoulder. I tore my ligaments in my shoulder for about three years. I’m going back to the drawing board and get the surgery fixed. We want to go up in the division now. I was struggling to make this weight, but we’d like to rematch with him. We made a mistake. I didn’t study and that was a mistake I did. Like I said, I never studied the fight and I should have.”

There’s no telling how long it’ll take for Donaire to recover from the ligament surgery. Shoulder surgery is very serious for a boxer and it can take a long time to recover from. I wouldn’t be surprised if Donaire isn’t back in the ring until 2014. It’s better he take it slow and let his shoulder heal correctly rather than rushing it and getting back into training too soon and reinjuring his shoulder.
