Donaire targeting Terrazas for fight in October for WBC 122 lb. title

donaire22By Chris Williams: Former IBF/WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire (31-2, 20 KO’s) wants to stick it out at 122 a little longer to try and capture the WBC super bantamweight title against champion Victor Terrazas (37-2-1, 21 KO’s) in October.

According to Donaire’s facebook, his promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank wants Donaire to go after then Top Rank promoted Terrazas for his World Boxing Council 122 lb. title instead of having him move up to featherweight to look for fights up there.

Donaire was beaten by WBA champ Guillermo Rigondeaux by a 12 round unanimous decision on April 13th of this month. Donaire has since had shoulder surgery to repair a torn ligaments. He should be healed and ready to get back in the ring by September barring any setbacks during rehab.

One of the things that Donaire complained about after his loss to Rigondeaux was the trouble that he had in making the weight. He reportedly had problems getting down from the mid-130s to get to the 122 lb. weight limit for super bantamweight. He made the weight, but after he rehydrated, he looked like a lightweight.

He was carrying around far too much weight to be facing someone as quick as Rigondeaux and that weight ended up being a heavy anchor for Donaire because it didn’t help him at all except for the one time where he wrestled out of a clinch and hit Rigondeaux with a left hand that knocked him down. The rest of the time the weight hurt Donaire by making him slower and easier to elude.

Donaire says he’s going to work on his diet so that he can make the weight comfortably. You have to wonder whether there is some worry from him about how he’d do at 126. Donaire is considered to be the next Manny Pacquiao, but it doesn’t look like he’s as eager as Pacquiao was in moving from weight class to weight class.
