Donaire recovering from shoulder surgery

donaire222By Chris Williams: Former two division world champion Nonito Donaire is recovering from his shoulder surgery that was performed last Friday to repair torn ligaments in his right shoulder. Donaire is saying that the surgery on his right shoulder was a success and that he should heal up fine and be back in the ring shortly.

Donaire said on his twitter “Surgery went well. Surgery was Friday and I only took 2 doses of Vicodin Dr. gave me. I have a high pain tolerance.”

Some boxing fans think Donaire’s excuse about needing shoulder surgery was a way for him to explain away his 12 round unanimous decision loss to WBA super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux on April 13th of this month. Donaire lost the fight by the scores of 116-111, 115-112 and 114-113.

Those scores were a lot closer than the actual fight because Donaire was really dominated by Rigondeaux and never competitive aside from the 10th round when Donaire was able to knock Rigondeaux down after pushing himself out of a clinch and nailing the Cuban before he was ready to protect himself.
Donaire’s loss to Rigondeaux wasn’t because of his injured shoulder.

Donaire’s right hand isn’t considered his power hand and it wouldn’t matter all that much even if he was at 100 percent because it’s his left hand that does all the damage for him, and Rigondeaux did a great job of neutralizing it so that Donaire was hitting mostly air all night long.

After his shoulder heals, Donaire will be back in the ring later on this year to fight in the featherweight division. He says it’s too difficult for him to fight at super bantamweight because of all the weight he has to take off.

However, Donaire is going to have to fight a lot better if he wants to make it in the featherweight division because he’s not going to go far just looking to land a big left hook. You’ve got to have more than just that going for you and Rigondeaux and Omar Narvaez have both created the blue print in how to neutralize Donaire’s left hook.
