Donaire mocks Rigondeaux’s height at weigh-in

donaire#9By Chris Williams: WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire (31-1, 20 KO’s), one of the bigger fighters in the 122 lb. division, chose to mock the normal sized for the weight class Guillermo Rigondeaux (11-0, 8 KO’s) at yesterdays’ weigh-in when the two fighters stood for the traditional stare down. The 5’7” Donaire crouched down several inches to stand eye to eye with the 5’4” Rigondeaux so that he could wink at him and smile if making fun of his lack of height in comparison to him.

Rigondeaux and Donaire will be facing each other tonight at the Radio City Music Hall, in New York, New York, USA in a fight that will be televised on HBO.

Donaire is huge for the super bantamweight division weight class, and you have to wonder why he’s still fighting in the 122 lb. weight division when he arguably should be fighting at lightweight right now. He’s basically a lightweight fighting super bantamweights, and it just seemed silly for Donaire to be making fun of Rigondeaux’s lack of height compared to himself.

Donaire obviously is fighting at super bantamweight still so that he can gain advantage over his smaller opponents similar to what former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. does by fighting at 160 and then rehydrating up to cruiserweight. Donaire should be fighting the likes of WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner at 135.

Broner and Donaire are the same height at 5’7” and Donaire wouldn’t have to crouch down and make faces at Broner because he would be looking him dead in the eye in a stare down. I don’t understand why Donaire is staying in a weight class where virtually everyone is much smaller than him when it’s clear that he’s a lightweight in size. Let’s see how Donaire does against Broner, Ricky Burns, Richard Abril, Terrence Crawford, and Miguel Vazquez at 135.
