De La Hoya thinks Malignaggi has a chance against Broner

malign1By Scott Gilfoid: Unlike most other boxing fans who see WBA welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi (32-4, 7 KO’s) as having virtually no chance of beating undefeated challenger Adrien Broner (26-0, 23 KO’s) in their fight on June 22nd, Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions feels that the 32-year-old Malignaggi is a live dog and can win this fight at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

De La Hoya said to Fighthype.com “Don’t underestimate him [Malignaggi]. What’s exciting is that if it goes well [and Broner wins]…he goes back down to 140. He’s in the mix down there.”

For Malignaggi to have a chance at beating Broner he’s going to have to work on his power and his movement extensively in training camp because he’s lacking in both areas in a big way to win this fight.

First off, Malignaggi doesn’t hit hard enough to make Broner respect his power. If all Malignaggi has is a jab and nothing else, then Broner is going to come forward all night long and walk though that punch to get close enough to land his power shots and flurries.

At 32, I don’t think Malignaggi is going to be able to develop his power enough to where he’ll be able to do anything in this fight. I know he work on his form to generate as much power as possible, but I still think Malignaggi won’t be any stronger than he is now and that’s not going to be enough.

If Malignaggi can move a lot more it could help him in theory in deeping out of range of Broner’s power shots. If you look at Broner he fights like of flat-footed. He’s not really like a prime Floyd Mayweather; he’s more like the older version where he’s walking around the ring instead of moving quickly on his toes.

If Malignaggi can move around the ring while shooting out jabs frequently, he could maybe win a decision. I still don’t like his chances, but it’s a possibility if Broner can’t get his shots off. Malignaggi might be able to do to him what he did in beating former WBA welterweight champion Vyacheslav Senchenko by jabbing him into submission.
