(Photo Credit: Stephanie Trapp / SHOWTIME) By Dan Ambrose: It goes without saying that Golden Boy Promotions wanted no part of matching their “Golden Goose” WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) against unbeaten WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s). Golden Boy wants to make a huge pay per view star out of Canelo and they’ve matched him against weaker opponents to make him look good. Trout could ruin their big plans of making Canelo a Golden egg laying Golden Goose.
The fight was made anyway after Canelo chose to accept the challenge rather than being branded as a ducker by many in the boxing community. However, Trout may end up causing Canelo to regret his decision in fighting him by giving him a one-sided beating and plucking Golden Boy’s Golden Goose in front of a nationwide audience in the U.S on Showtime.
Golden Boy has used the utmost care in selecting opponents for Canelo to fight, and that’s why we’ve seen Canelo in with guys like Matthew Hatton, Alfonso Gomez, Kermit Cintron, Ryan Rhodes, Lovemore N’dou and Josesito Lopez instead of the likes of Trout, Erislandy Lara and Vanes Martirosyan.
I guess Canelo didn’t want to put the fight off any longer because the guy that Golden Boy wanted him to fight tonight was the slow as molasses Alfredo Angulo, one of their stable fighters.
When you have a fighter like Canelo making the decisions about which opponents he’ll fight instead of his promoters, it’s a recipe for disaster. To be sure, I’m very glad that Canelo has decided to step up and request the fight with Trout, but I think his promoters know more than him that this is not a good fight for the slow, flat-footed Canelo.
There’s a reason why Golden Boy has been reluctant to put their Golden Goose in with Trout, Lara and Martirisyan and I think the reason is they’re worried about what will happen to him. These aren’t fights where Canelo can just win on size alone or by just showing up in the ring.
Canelo will have to show skills tonight that he’s never shown before in his career and I don’t think that’s going to happen. I think Trout is going to make Canelo look as bad as Guillermo Rigondeaux made Nonito Donaire look last Saturday night in schooling him.
