Canelo-Trout: Can Austin beat the house fighter Canelo at the Alamodome?

1316By Dan Ambrose: WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) may be from Mexico and WBA champ Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s) from the United States, but Canelo will very much be considered the house fighter when he steps inside the ring on April 20th to face Trout at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

With San Antonio being near the Mexican border and the city having with 63% of the people of Mexican origin, Canelo is going to be considered the home fighter in this bout. What this means in terms of the fight is that if the bout is anywhere close, we’ll likely see Canelo get the nod. I expect that and I imagine Trout is expecting that as well.

However, what we don’t want to see is another Felix Sturm vs. Oscar De La Hoya type of fight where one fighter gets totally dominated, like De La Hoya was, and yet still get the decision win.

That would be a black eye for boxing and a black eye for Canelo because his win would be tainted, and his promoters at Golden Boy would likely be happy with any kind of win over Trout and they would probably have Canelo move on rather than letting him clear up the controversy in a rematch.

I’m really hoping we don’t see a hometown decision in this fight but that’s pretty much the only way I see Canelo being able to win it. I don’t think he’s got the boxing skills to win a normal decision over Trout because Trout is the much better boxer of the two.

The judges are going to be seeing Canelo get a jab pumped into his face all night long and it’s going to be pretty one-sided, but I think we’re going to see Canelo winning a lot of rounds that should have gone to Trout. I hope that doesn’t happen but being that Canelo is the house fighter, I see that as the reality here.
